Kitchen chemistry → design
Fifth grade still uses pictures and a kitchen. The work gets sharper: write evidence, change one variable, and improve a prototype you can hold.
1. Science (15 min) — dissolve, don’t guess
Two cups of warm water. Stir 1 tsp sugar into A until gone. Stir 1 tsp flour into B. Child writes two facts: what they saw, not what they “think happened.” Label: solution vs mixture (or “dissolved / not dissolved” if the word is new).
2. Math (8 min) — measure like it matters
Same spoon every time. Record teaspoons. If you double the sugar in a third cup, predict before you stir. Check. That’s a controlled test, not cooking chaos.
3. Engineering (20 min) — boat, ramp, or paper tower
Ask: Carry 10 pennies across a sink in a foil boat — or build a paper ramp that rolls a toy car 1 meter — family picks one constraint.
Plan: 2-minute sketch. Label materials.
Create: Build once.
Improve: Change one thing only (fold, tape, height). Test again. Write: “I changed ___ because ___.”
4. Share (2 min)
Child teaches the parent the improved design in 4 sentences. That is the elementary capstone voice.
