Weather tools: thermometer

Learning goal This week's job: Weather tools: thermometer.

1. Hook

How to do this lesson online
  1. Tap Read the lesson aloud (or a grown-up reads).
  2. Look at the pictures. Follow the numbered steps.
  3. Do the tap-and-try lab on this page. Do not skip it.
  4. Fill the short answers with a grown-up nearby.
  5. Do the quiz. Then teach it back in your own words.

You are at home on a computer or tablet. Everything you need is on this page.

Today's puzzle

Is it warmer in the sun or the shade? How could we prove it with a number?

Then: lab → guided → quiz → teach it back. The lab is the lesson, not a decoration.

2. Teach

What you're learning

Today we learn: Weather tools: thermometer.

Standards alignment: NGSS 1-ESS (domain-level; works with any state’s standards)

STEM in this lesson

STEM this week is Weather tools: thermometer: look, write a fact, label a guess, then test one change.

Hold onto these
  • A thermometer measures how hot or cold something is.
  • Temperature is measured in degrees. In the U.S. We often use degrees Fahrenheit (°F).
  • The red or silver line goes up when it's warmer and down when it's colder.
This week’s lesson

Water freezes at 32°F. A nice spring day might be 70°F.

Put one thermometer in the sun and one in the shade for 10 minutes, then read both.

Watch one worked example
  1. Sun thermometer: line at 80.
  2. Shade thermometer: line at 70.
  3. Compare: 80 is more than 70.
  4. 80 − 70 = 10.
  5. The sun spot is 10 degrees warmer.
Now you try — with me

Read an outdoor thermometer at breakfast and after school for 3 days. Record both.

The usual mistake

Reading the thermometer while holding the bulb (your hand warms it).

Why this shows up in real life

Weather reports tell the temperature so we know what to wear.

No classroom teacher today — this page is the lesson. A grown-up sits nearby. Model once, wait 10–20 seconds, then let the child try.

Try it — this is the game

Tap, move, listen. This is the experiment. Then we quiz what you just did.

Your work — type it here

Do the lab (tap Look, Fact, Guess, Test). Then type what you saw, in kid words.

3. Guided practice

Try these with me — type the missing word, then check.

Reveal the thinking

Wait, then read the top of the line.

4. Independent practice

Work the set. Check when finished — this is practice (mastery quiz is next).

1. A thermometer measures
2. When it gets colder the line goes
3. Water freezes at
4. Temperature is measured in

5. Mastery check

Scored quiz — results save to your gradebook.

1. Sun 85, shade 75: the sun is
2. A hot summer day is about
3. To read it fairly
4. Weather reports tell

The lab is on this page

Do the experiment here. Change one thing. Read what happened. We do not send you to an outside simulation site. Today: Weather tools: thermometer.
