Precalculus functions OR Statistics: data ethics & displays
1. Hook
- Read (or listen to) what you’re learning. Don’t jump to the quiz.
- Walk the worked example. Then use the interactive lab on this page.
- Guided set → independent set → mastery check → teach-back.
- If you write a paper, stay on campus: Citation Helper, Source Library, Paper Studio.
This is self-paced homeschool on Life Academy. Everything you need is on this page.
Precalculus: is f(x) = x³ − x even, odd, or neither? Statistics: a graph of crime "skyrocketing" uses a y-axis from 980 to 1,000. Is it honest?
Then: lab → guided → quiz → teach it back. The lab is the lesson, not a decoration.
2. Teach
Precalculus path: analyze functions (domain, range, symmetry, intervals of increase, composition). Statistics path: choose honest data displays and handle data ethically.
Standards alignment: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.HSS (domain-level; works with any state’s standards)
STEM this week is Precalculus functions OR Statistics: data ethics & displays: units, a model, and a check another student could repeat.
- Precalc: even functions satisfy f(−x) = f(x) (symmetric about the y-axis); odd functions satisfy f(−x) = −f(x) (symmetric about the origin).
- Stats: choose displays by data type — bar charts for categories; histograms, dotplots, and boxplots for quantitative data.
- Stats: ethical data use means informed consent, privacy, honest axes, and reporting all results, not just favorable ones.
Precalc: f(x) = x³ − x: f(−x) = −x³ + x = −f(x), so f is odd. g(x) = x² + 4 is even. f is increasing where its graph rises; for y = x², that is (0, ∞).
Stats: a bar chart with a y-axis starting at 980 makes 990 vs. 1,000 look like a doubling; starting at 0 shows a 1% difference. Collecting student data requires consent and removing names (de-identifying).
- Precalc: classify h(x) = x⁴ − 3x².
- h(−x) = (−x)⁴ − 3(−x)² = x⁴ − 3x².
- That equals h(x).
- h is even. (Stats path: name the variable type, pick a display, check the axes, and state one ethical safeguard.)
Precalc: classify k(x) = x³ + 1 and find its domain and range. Stats: choose and justify a display for "favorite streaming service" and for "minutes of daily screen time."
Precalc: assuming every function is even or odd. Stats: using a pie chart for quantitative data, or cropping an axis to dramatize change.
Function analysis underlies engineering and economics; honest charts and ethical data handling are required in research and business.
No classroom teacher today — this page is the lesson. Follow the how-to, then the lab, then the quiz. Follow Lesson Studio, then the lab, then the quiz. Open Transcripts for credits and grades.
Interactive lab (on this page)
Change one variable. Record what happened. This model is the lab — not an off-site sim.
Play & explore
Hands-on practice for this lesson. Your progress saves automatically.
Your work — type it here
Type the answer. Then tap Check my work. This is the assignment — not optional reading.
3. Guided practice
Try these with me — type the missing word, then check.
Reveal the thinking
Precalc: substitute −x and compare to f(x) and −f(x). Stats: match the display to the data type and check the axes.
4. Independent practice
Work the set. Check when finished — this is practice (mastery quiz is next).
5. Mastery check
Scored quiz — results save to your gradebook.
Show the math — don't only tap a letter
The lab is the worked example you can move. Then the quiz checks that you own Precalculus functions OR Statistics: data ethics & displays.

Honest limit: We did not film a custom movie for every core lesson. The teach-back, the on-page lab, and the campus library are the curriculum. The teach-back, the on-page lab, and Lesson Studio are the lesson.
6. Reflection / teach-back
Teach-back: Explain Precalculus functions OR Statistics: data ethics & displays in your own words. Give one example and name the usual mistake.
