Place value → 1,000,000

Learning goal This week's job: Place value → 1,000,000.

1. Hook

How to do this lesson online (no classroom teacher)
  1. Hear the goal. Watch one worked example (pictures + steps).
  2. Try the interactive lab on this page. Move something. Read what happened.
  3. Guided fills, then independent practice, then the scored quiz.
  4. Teach it back: one example + the usual mistake.

There is no classroom teacher. This page teaches you. The lab is on this site — not an outside classroom. Stay on this page. The pictures, the game, and Your work are the lesson.

Today's puzzle

A million is a thousand thousands! How do you read, write, and compare numbers that big?

Then: lab → guided → quiz → teach it back. The lab is the lesson, not a decoration.

2. Teach

What you're learning

Read, write, and compare multi-digit whole numbers to 1,000,000 using place value (CCSS 4.NBT.1, 4.NBT.2).

Standards alignment: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT (domain-level; works with any state’s standards)

STEM in this lesson

STEM this week is Place value → 1,000,000: write the number, label the unit, check a second way.

Hold onto these
  • Each place is 10 times the place to its right: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions.
  • Forms: standard (482,316), word (four hundred eighty-two thousand, three hundred sixteen), expanded (400,000 + 80,000 + 2,000 + 300 + 10 + 6).
  • Compare from the greatest place: 482,316 vs 479,999: hundred thousands same, ten thousands 8 > 7, so 482,316 > 479,999.
This week’s lesson

Commas separate periods (groups of 3): 1,000,000.

The 4 in 40,000 is 10 times the 4 in 4,000.

Watch one worked example
  1. Number: 305,072.
  2. 3 hundred thousands.
  3. 0 ten thousands, 5 thousands.
  4. 0 hundreds, 7 tens, 2 ones.
  5. Expanded: 300,000 + 5,000 + 70 + 2.
Now you try — with me

Write 5 big numbers from news or sports in standard, word, and expanded form, then order them.

The usual mistake

Forgetting zeros as placeholders (writing 30572 for 305,072).

Why this shows up in real life

City populations and stadium crowds use big numbers.

No classroom teacher today — this page is the lesson. A grown-up sits nearby. Model once, wait 10–20 seconds, then prompt. A grown-up sits nearby. Model once, wait, then let the child try.

Do this lab on Life Academy. Move something. Read what changed — then quiz.

Your work — type it here

Type the answer. Then tap Check my work. This is the assignment — not optional reading.

3. Guided practice

Try these with me — type the missing word, then check.

Reveal the thinking

Each place is 10 times the place to its right.

4. Independent practice

Work the set. Check when finished — this is practice (mastery quiz is next).

1. 482,316 > 479,999 because
2. Expanded form of 50,302
3. The 7 in 700,000 is how many times the 7 in 70,000?
4. Standard form of "two hundred six thousand, fifteen"

5. Mastery check

Scored quiz — results save to your gradebook.

1. Which is greatest?
2. 1,000,000 has how many zeros?
3. Value of 9 in 493,120
4. Commas separate

Show the math — don't only tap a letter

The lab is the worked example you can move. Then the quiz checks that you own Place value → 1,000,000.
