You are at home on a computer or tablet. Everything you need is on this page.

Today's puzzle

Rain in May! Both words have the long a sound, but they spell it differently. Can you spot how?

Then: lab → guided → quiz → teach it back. The lab is the lesson, not a decoration.

What you're learning

Today we learn: ai/ay = /ā/.

Standards alignment: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2 (domain-level; works with any state’s standards)

STEM in this lesson

A line you can point to is evidence. This week's job: ai/ay = /ā/.

Hold onto these
  • A vowel team is two letters that work together to make one vowel sound.
  • Ai and ay both say long a /ā/.
  • Ai usually comes in the middle of a word (rain, paint). Ay usually comes at the end (day, play).
This week’s lesson

Ai words: rain, train, paint, mail, snail, wait, chain. Ay words: day, play, stay, gray, tray, spray, May.

Story: On a gray day in May, Jay waited for the train. Rain fell on his tail-shaped kite. "I will stay and play," he said, and he painted a snail.

Watch one worked example
  1. Spell "train."
  2. Sounds: /t/ /r/ /ā/ /n/.
  3. /ā/ is in the middle, so use ai.
  4. Write t-r-ai-n.
  5. Read it back: train.
Now you try — with me

Read the story. Sort the long a words into ai and ay columns. Then spell: mail, play, chain, stay.

The usual mistake

Using ay in the middle ("trayn") or ai at the end ("plai"). Ai middle, ay end.

Why this shows up in real life

Days of the week all end in ay: Monday, Tuesday, Friday.

Read this (sounds first): Sam sat. Sam sat on a mat. Tap, tap, tap. Point under each word. Skill this week: ai/ay = /ā/.

No classroom teacher today — this page is the lesson. A grown-up sits nearby. Model once, wait 10–20 seconds, then let the child try.
