Add within 100 (no regroup)

Learning goal This week's job: Add within 100 (no regroup).

1. Hook

How to do this lesson online
  1. Tap Read the lesson aloud (or a grown-up reads).
  2. Look at the pictures. Follow the numbered steps.
  3. Do the tap-and-try lab on this page. Do not skip it.
  4. Fill the short answers with a grown-up nearby.
  5. Do the quiz. Then teach it back in your own words.

You are at home on a computer or tablet. Everything you need is on this page.

Today's puzzle

32 + 45. Can you add the tens, then the ones, in your head?

Then: lab → guided → quiz → teach it back. The lab is the lesson, not a decoration.

2. Teach

What you're learning

Today we learn: Add within 100 (no regroup).

Standards alignment: CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.NBT (domain-level; works with any state’s standards)

STEM in this lesson

STEM this week is Add within 100 (no regroup): try it, then check a second way.

Hold onto these
  • Line up tens under tens and ones under ones.
  • Add ones first, then tens.
  • 32 + 45: ones 2 + 5 = 7, tens 30 + 40 = 70, total 77.
This week’s lesson

Place-value blocks: rods for tens, cubes for ones. Combine rods with rods, cubes with cubes.

Mental way: break apart. 53 + 24 = 50 + 20 + 3 + 4 = 70 + 7 = 77.

Watch one worked example
  1. Problem: 61 + 27.
  2. Ones: 1 + 7 = 8.
  3. Tens: 60 + 20 = 80.
  4. Total: 88.
  5. Check with an estimate: about 60 + 30 = 90. Close!
Now you try — with me

Solve: 23 + 54, 40 + 36, 71 + 18, 12 + 85. Show one with blocks or a drawing.

The usual mistake

Adding a tens digit to a ones digit because columns weren't lined up. Line up places.

Why this shows up in real life

Adding scores, prices, and pages read uses two-digit addition.

No classroom teacher today — this page is the lesson. A grown-up sits nearby. Model once, wait 10–20 seconds, then let the child try.

Your work — type it here

Type the answer. Then tap Check my work. This is the assignment — not optional reading.

3. Guided practice

Try these with me — type the missing word, then check.

Reveal the thinking

Add ones, add tens, combine.

4. Independent practice

Work the set. Check when finished — this is practice (mastery quiz is next).

1. To add 34 + 25, first add
2. 50 + 30 =
3. 42 + 16 =
4. Lining up places means

5. Mastery check

Scored quiz — results save to your gradebook.

1. 25 + 32 =
2. 14 + 63 =
3. 70 + 22 =
4. 36 + 41 =

Show the math — don't only tap a letter

The lab is the worked example you can move. Then the quiz checks that you own Add within 100 (no regroup).
