Map skills: title, key, scale, compass rose
1. Hook
- Hear the goal. Watch one worked example (pictures + steps).
- Try the interactive lab on this page. Move something. Read what happened.
- Guided fills, then independent practice, then the scored quiz.
- Teach it back: one example + the usual mistake.
There is no classroom teacher. This page teaches you. The lab is on this site — not an outside classroom. Stay on this page. The pictures, the game, and Your work are the lesson.
A map is a message from a mapmaker. Can you read all its parts?
Then: lab → guided → quiz → teach it back. The lab is the lesson, not a decoration.
2. Teach
Use map elements (title, key/legend, scale, compass rose) to interpret maps (C3 D2.Geo.1.3-5, D2.Geo.3.3-5).
Standards alignment: C3 Framework D2.Geo (3-5) · D3 Evaluating Sources (domain-level; works with any state’s standards)
Dates, maps, and sources are data. This week's job: Map skills: title, key, scale, compass rose.
- Title: tells what the map shows. Key (legend): explains symbols and colors.
- Compass rose: shows cardinal directions N, S, E, W and intermediate directions NE, SE, SW, NW.
- Scale: shows real distance, like 1 inch = 10 miles.
To use a scale, measure on the map and multiply: 3 inches x 10 miles = 30 miles.
Grid maps use letters and numbers (B4) to find places.
- Title: City Park.
- Key: tree symbol = picnic area.
- Compass: the pond is NE of the gate.
- Scale: 1 inch = 100 feet.
- Pond is 2 inches away: 200 feet.
Draw a map of your neighborhood with all 4 elements.
Assuming north is always "up" without checking the compass rose.
Maps help hikers, drivers, and pilots.
