Driver Education: find your state’s DMV handbook

Life Academy Driver Education teaches rules that apply across the United States: signs, signals, and pavement markings; right-of-way; speed and weather; defensive driving; impaired and distracted driving; sharing the road; emergencies; and insurance and registration.

Every state writes its own permit test, licensing ages, graduated-license rules, required supervised hours, and behind-the-wheel requirements. Your permit test is based on your state’s driver handbook, not on this course. Study the handbook before your test.

How to get your state’s handbook

  1. Open USA.gov’s official directory: usa.gov/motor-vehicle-services. Pick your state to reach its official DMV (or BMV, MVD, or Department of Public Safety) site.
  2. On that site, search for "driver handbook" or "driver manual". Download the newest edition, which is usually a free PDF.
  3. Make sure the web address is the state’s official site (often ending in .gov). Avoid sites that charge for a free handbook.
  4. Write down your state’s permit age, test format, required supervised hours, and whether a driver-ed course is required. Put that note in your transcript packet.

Then continue with the Driver Education modules and the insurance and defensive driving module.
