How to Homeschool in North Carolina
A plain-English starting point for North Carolina families: the legal basics, a simple first week, and an online K–12 curriculum built to help you meet homeschool requirements.
Step 1: Know North Carolina's homeschool basics
In short: The teaching parent needs at least a high school diploma or equivalent. File a notice of intent with the NC Division of Non-Public Education, teach at least 9 calendar months a year, keep attendance and immunization records, and give a nationally standardized test each year.
For the current statute, deadlines, and forms, see HSLDA's North Carolina homeschool law page. Statewide support group: NCHE.
This is a general summary, not legal advice. Homeschool laws change, and following them is the parent's responsibility. Check HSLDA or your state's education department before you start.
