Homeschool Record Keeping

Good records protect your family, make testing or evaluations easy, and turn into a transcript later. A simple system takes about 10 minutes a week.

Learn How it works

What to keep each year

  1. Your state paperwork: notice of intent, approval letters, and evaluation or test results.
  2. Attendance: days or hours of instruction. The Life Academy gradebook and report card track completed lessons.
  3. Grades: quiz scores and course grades. Print or download records from the transcripts page.
  4. Work samples: 2–3 per subject per quarter (beginning, middle, end of the year) to show progress.
  5. Reading list: use the reading log.
  6. High school: course descriptions, textbooks and resources used, credits, and activities.

A simple system

  • One binder or folder per child per year, with tabs for each subject.
  • Friday routine (10 minutes): print or save the week's progress, file one work sample, and update the reading log.
  • Back up digital records in two places. Life Academy progress is saved on your device and, when signed in, to your parent account. Use “Download records” on the transcripts page for a file backup.
  • Keep high school records permanently. Keep earlier years for at least the length your state requires (many families keep everything).
