How to Homeschool in Pennsylvania
A plain-English starting point for Pennsylvania families: the legal basics, a simple first week, and an online K–12 curriculum built to help you meet homeschool requirements.
Step 1: Know Pennsylvania's homeschool basics
In short: The supervisor needs a high school diploma. File a notarized affidavit (or unsworn declaration) with your superintendent before starting and by August 1 each year, teach 180 days or 900/990 hours, keep a portfolio, test in grades 3, 5 and 8, and turn in an evaluator's certification by June 30.
For the current statute, deadlines, and forms, see HSLDA's Pennsylvania homeschool law page. HSLDA's page also lists state and local support groups.
This is a general summary, not legal advice. Homeschool laws change, and following them is the parent's responsibility. Check HSLDA or your state's education department before you start.
