How to Homeschool in Tennessee
A plain-English starting point for Tennessee families: the legal basics, a simple first week, and an online K–12 curriculum built to help you meet homeschool requirements.
Step 1: Know Tennessee's homeschool basics
In short: Choose an option: an independent home school (parent with a high school diploma/GED, 4 hours a day for 180 days, notice to the district, attendance records, testing in grades 5, 7 and 9), a church-related umbrella school, or a Category III distance-learning school.
For the current statute, deadlines, and forms, see HSLDA's Tennessee homeschool law page. Statewide support group: Tennessee Home Education Association.
This is a general summary, not legal advice. Homeschool laws change, and following them is the parent's responsibility. Check HSLDA or your state's education department before you start.
