Lab Safety Guide

Most lab accidents are preventable. Learn these rules before every hands-on lab, and have a parent sign the safety contract.

Learn How it works

Before the lab

  • Read the whole procedure first. Ask a parent if anything is unclear.
  • Clear the workspace. Tie back long hair, roll up loose sleeves, and wear closed-toe shoes.
  • Put on safety goggles whenever you use liquids, heat, chemicals, glass, or anything that can fly.
  • Know where water, a fire extinguisher, and a first-aid kit are.

During the lab

  • Never taste, sniff directly, or touch chemicals. To smell, waft: wave the air toward your nose.
  • Never mix household chemicals. Bleach plus ammonia or vinegar makes toxic gas.
  • Point test tubes away from people when heating. Use heat-proof gloves.
  • Never leave heat or flames unattended. Keep food and drinks away.

After the lab

  • Clean up, throw away or store materials the way the directions say, and wash your hands.

Emergencies

  • Chemical in eyes: flush with running water for 15 minutes and get an adult. Burn: cool running water for 10–20 minutes. Fire: get out and call 911. Poisoning: call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.

Try it Lab safety contract

I will follow all lab safety rules. I will read directions first, wear goggles when needed, never taste or mix chemicals without directions, keep my area clean, tell an adult right away about any accident, and wash my hands after every lab.
