Online 3rd grade math tutor
Third grade is where multiplication, division, and fractions show up all at once. Kids who were fine with adding can suddenly feel lost.

What usually trips up 3rd graders
- Multiplication as memorization only. If 7×8 is just a fact to recall, word problems fall apart. We build it as equal groups and arrays first, so the facts stick.
- Fractions on a number line. Many kids think 1/4 is bigger than 1/3 because 4 is bigger than 3. We fold, draw, and place fractions until that clicks.
- Rounding and place value. Rounding to the nearest 10 or 100 depends on understanding what each digit is worth.
- Area and perimeter. They get mixed up constantly. We count squares, then walk the edges.
- Two-step word problems. We practice slowing down: what do we know, what are we asked, what's the first step.
Keeping it short and kid-sized
Eight-year-olds don't sit still for an hour of drills. Sessions alternate quick wins, a drawing or game, and a few focused problems. A parent nearby for the first session helps.
Who you'll work with
I'm David Clifford, the one person behind Life Academy. I've tutored for 8 years, worked as a substitute teacher for Pasco County Schools (including long-term assignments), and hold a BAS degree, cum laude. Every session is live, 1:1, with me, on Zoom or Google Meet. No AI tutor, no handoff to someone else.
Price
$35/hour. Your first full hour is $25. A 4-hour bundle is $130. Book at least 24 hours ahead; a free 15-minute consult is available first. Tutoring is sold separately from the homeschool plans. See the refund policy.
Not ready to book? Two free ways to see how I teach: free Math Office Hours (grades 2–8, a 30-minute live drop-in every Tuesday at 8 PM ET) and the free Week 1 of every grade in the Life Academy classroom, no card needed.
Questions parents ask
Is 3rd grade too young for online tutoring?
Usually not, as long as sessions mix in drawing and short games. A parent nearby for the first session helps.
Should my 3rd grader memorize times tables?
Fluency matters, but understanding should come first. We build multiplication as equal groups, then practice the facts.
What does it cost?
$35/hour. The first full hour is $25, and a 4-hour bundle is $130.
Is there a free option?
Yes. Free Math Office Hours run Tuesdays at 8 PM ET for grades 2–8, and Week 1 of every grade in the Life Academy classroom is free.
