Online 5th grade math tutor
Fifth grade math is heavy on fractions and decimals: adding unlike fractions, multiplying them, and dividing by decimals. It's the foundation for everything in middle school.

What usually trips up 5th graders
- Common denominators. Kids learn the steps without knowing why. We use area models so 1/2 + 1/3 makes visual sense.
- Multiplying fractions makes things smaller. That breaks the rule kids learned in 3rd grade. We talk it through with real examples like half of a half.
- Long division. Most errors come from place value and subtraction, not the division itself. I find the specific slip.
- Decimal place value. Is 0.5 bigger than 0.45? We line them up and use money.
- Volume and the coordinate plane. New topics, best learned hands-on.
Getting ready for middle school
If 6th grade is next, the most useful thing we can do is make fractions solid. Ratios, percents, and equations all lean on them.

Questions parents ask
My 5th grader hates fractions. Where do we start?
Usually with equivalent fractions and what the denominator means. Once those are solid, adding and multiplying follow.
Can you help with long division homework?
Yes. Most long division errors are place value or subtraction slips. I find the specific one and fix that.
What does it cost?
$35/hour. The first full hour is $25, and a 4-hour bundle is $130.
Is there a free option?
Yes. Free Math Office Hours run Tuesdays at 8 PM ET for grades 2–8, and Week 1 of every grade in the Life Academy classroom is free.
