Learn How it works

• A fraction a/b means a parts out of b equal parts. The bottom number is the denominator; the top is the numerator.
• Simplify: divide top and bottom by their greatest common factor (GCF). 8/12 → ÷4 → 2/3.
• Add or subtract: get a common denominator first. 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6.
• Multiply: top × top and bottom × bottom. 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2.
• Divide: keep, change, flip. 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 1/2 × 4/1 = 2.
